Ranakpur

Jain Pilgrimage, RanakpurRanakpur is a charming and peaceful town surrounded by hills. It is easily accessible from both Jodhpur and Udaipur. Ranakpur is an important Jain pilgrimage centre, although it has older Hindu temples as well.

The Jain temple at Ranakpur is dedicated to Adinatha and dates back to the 15th century. It is a massive temple covering 48,000 sq ft and has 1,444 marble pillars, each uniquely carved. The temple faces all four directions to symbolize the Tirthankara's conquest of the four cardinal directions. The temple is divided into 29 halls, each with domes and ceilings more beautiful than the other.

The sun temple at Ranakpur dates back to the 13th century CE and was rebuilt in the 15th century. This temple built in the classic Naga style and has intricate carved sculptures. It is built of white lime stone.

While the temples are spellbinding, Ranakpur also has a beautiful heritage hotel that makes for a comfortable holiday in the lap of luxury. Called Maharani Bagh, it has a very beautiful orchard made by the Maharani of Jodhpur in the 19th century. Situated conveniently in close proximity to the Ranakpur Jain temples, the orchard surrounded by the beautiful Aravali hills was the holiday resort of the royal family. Now with eighteen cottages and a swimming pool, Maharani Bagh is perfect for a relaxed vacation. Outdoor camping and safaris are also available.

In all, Ranakpur provides enough to keep both body and soul in good spirits.
