Jhunjhunu, the capital of erstwhile Shekhawati region lies in the desert part of north Rajasthan. It is named after Rao Shekhaji, the founder of the Shekhawat clan of Rajputs. Jhunjhunu lies 180 km from Jaipur and 245 km from Delhi and was established in the memory of Jujhar Singh Nehra, a Jat of Nehra clan. Besides, Jhunjhunu is also the district head quarters and ancient capital of Shekhawati. Its beautiful buildings are not to be missed by its visitors.

Thakur Shardul Singh Shekhawat was a courageous man and able administrator. He conquered Jhunjhunu from Rohilla Khan who was the last Nawab of Jhunjhunu.

Jhunjhunu is a big trading centre for wool, hides, and gram (chick-pea). The city's major industries include a dye factory and woollen mills. It is home to the mausoleum of Qamar-ud-Din Shah, who was the patron saint of the Kamkhani sect.

There are many attractions in this town. The Khetri Mahal with its most sophisticated architecture, the Bihariji Temple with its fine murals, the Rani Sati Temple, the Reservoir Ajit Sagar, the Kamarudin Shah Dargah (mausoleum) are some of the major attractions in Jhunjhunu. In the Modi Haveli you can view paintings showing many scenes from British India. There is a painting of a lady sitting in front of a gramophone and some soldiers escorting a train. There are splendid paintings at the Kaniram Narsinghdas Tibrewal Haveli too.
